What is a FibroScan? It’s a quick, painless scan that checks liver stiffness and estimates liver fat. Those details help us decide when your liver needs a closer look.
At Roots of Nature Aesthetic & Wellness in Lee’s Summit, we use FibroScan as part of a thoughtful approach to metabolic health.
What FibroScan Measures
A FibroScan provides 2 useful measurements that help us better understand your liver health and identify areas that may need attention.
1. Liver Stiffness
Scar tissue, called fibrosis, can make the liver firmer. A higher stiffness reading may signal a need for additional medical evaluation, although other factors can affect your score.
2. Liver Fat
A measurement called a “CAP score” estimates fat in the liver. This information can guide next steps to address concerns around weight, blood sugar, or insulin resistance.
FibroScan uses transient elastography, a method that sends gentle vibrations through liver tissue. The scan cannot diagnose every liver condition, but it does offer a proactive screening to monitor liver health.
What Happens at Your Visit?
We begin by asking about your health history and explaining the scan. Then, we place a small probe against your upper right abdomen while you lie comfortably. The scan measures how vibrations travel through your liver.
A visit takes about 30 minutes, and it doesn’t involve needles or downtime. You may need to avoid food beforehand, so follow the instructions we share when you book your appointment. Afterward, we review the findings and discuss further evaluation where appropriate.

How FibroScan Fits Into Metabolic Care
Your liver helps your body process nutrients and manage energy. Liver fat can be connected to metabolic changes, even when you feel well. We consider scan results alongside your health history when discussing next steps.
You can learn more about how we assess liver function in Lee’s Summit during your visit. If the FibroScan findings suggest you need additional medical attention or evaluation, we’ll discuss follow-up with your primary care team or a liver specialist.
FibroScan FAQs
Wondering what the scan can tell you? Here, we answer a few common questions.
Can a FibroScan detect liver changes before symptoms appear?
Yes, a FibroScan may identify increased liver fat or stiffness, even when you still feel well. Some liver conditions develop gradually without noticeable symptoms, making proactive evaluation and early assessment helpful.
We review your results alongside your health history and explain any recommendations for additional testing or follow-up care.
Do I need to fast before a FibroScan?
You may need to avoid eating for a few hours, because food can affect liver stiffness readings. We’ll share preparation instructions before your appointment.
If you have questions about medications or other health concerns, ask our team ahead of time.
Is there downtime after a FibroScan?
No, FibroScan requires no downtime at all. It’s noninvasive, so you can return to your usual activities right away. We review the results with you during your appointment and explain whether you should take any follow-up actions.
